Who are Manchester Play?

Manchester Play is a section of Children's Services within Manchester City Council. The team is based in Wenlock Way Offices, West Gorton and our brief is to provide resources and support to providers of open access and out of school play for children aged 5 to 14 years.

Manchester Play provides information, support, training and resources to organisations offering play opportunities for school aged children.

There are two forms of play provision -

Open Access and

Play Care.

Open Access Play offers supervised play opportunities for school aged children either after school, weekends or during school holidays. Children are able to leave unaccompanied and although there is a duty to look after children, workers do not provide "care" for children in their parents absence. Open Access exists in many different forms such as holiday playschemes, cubs & scouts, leisure activities and adventure playgrounds.

Play Care has similar content to Open Access provision but the main difference is that care is provided in the absence of parents, and children are not allowed to leave unaccompanied with staff responsible to provide care. For information on Out of School Care provision, contact:- Children's Information Service 0800 083 7921.
